The Brooklyn Nets have traded star Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick, and second-rounders in 2027 and 2029, the teams announced Monday.
The deal comes after Irving reportedly requested a trade Friday after extension talks with the Nets broke down. Irving was seeking a deal close to the maximum four years and $198.5 million Brooklyn could offer, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Irving has no guarantees from the Mavericks that they'll sign him to another contract, sources told NBA reporter Marc Stein. He's eligible to sign a two-year extension worth over $80 million.
Brooklyn engaged in several discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Nets preferred Dallas' trade package, Wojnarowski reports.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison was previously an executive at Nike and was with the company when it signed Irving in 2011. Head coach Jason Kidd also wanted to acquire the star guard, Wojnarowski adds.
Dallas now pairs Irving with superstar Luka Doncic, who's currently sidelined due to a heel contusion. Doncic has made four All-Star teams in five seasons but has never played alongside an All-Star teammate.
Irving, 30, is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game this campaign.
