The NBA is opening an investigation into the New York Knicks for a potential violation of the league's anti-tampering rules regarding the signing of free agent Jalen Brunson, sources told Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

The investigation will look to determine whether the Knicks made contact with Brunson prior to the start of free agency, Haynes adds.

Brunson, who signed a four-year, $104-million deal with New York after four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, was expected to meet with multiple teams prior to making a decision on his next contract. However, he accepted a deal with the Knicks within hours of teams being permitted to talk with free agents June 30.

The Knicks also hired Brunson's father, Rick, as an assistant coach weeks before signing the point guard. Leon Rose, the team's president, was previously an agent for both Brunsons.

Shortly after losing Brunson, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said his team "didn't get a chance" to make the 25-year-old an offer.

Brunson's stock rose significantly after he broke out in the 2022 playoffs, averaging 21.6 points per game in Dallas' run to the Western Conference finals.
