The Philadelphia 76ers won't fine Ben Simmons for his continued absence from games and practices because he's now sidelined due to personal reasons, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Philadelphia previously docked Simmons $1.4 million for missing all four preseason games, as well as practices and team activities.
However, Simmons reportedly told the 76ers he's not mentally ready to play to expectations yet following a lengthy holdout that began at the start of training camp.
The NBA's collective bargaining agreement protects the salaries of players who don't attend games, practices, and meetings "if such failure has been caused by the player's mental disability," according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Sixers general manager Daryl Morey said he'll continue to exercise patience in trade discussions surrounding Simmons in hopes of landing a "difference-maker" in return. Morey added that the situation could continue for the foreseeable future.
Simmons previously said he had no desire of suiting up for the 76ers again. Philadelphia is 2-1 thus far this season without its point guard.
