Report: NBA teams told salary cap won't drop below 2019-20 level

Some NBA teams have been told the 2020-21 salary cap won't be lower than $109 million - the same as last season - according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

"That is what they've been assured," Marks said on The Lowe Post podcast. "It will be no lower than 109. It could be 111."

The 2020-21 cap was projected at $115 million prior to the coronavirus pandemic. That number was $1 million less than the projection before the NBA's political controversy with Chinese business interests last fall.

Both instances cost the league substantial revenue in 2019-20, although it was reported last week that the Walt Disney World Resort bubble salvaged approximately $1.5 billion in losses.

By keeping the salary cap flat, teams should avoid a financial shock to their systems. Marks added teams are lobbying for the luxury-tax level to hit at $139 million next season, about $7 million more than the previous campaign.

The NBA is reportedly aiming for a December start for a shortened 2020-21 season.
