The Los Angeles Lakers requested a career-ending injury application to have Luol Deng's remaining salary removed from the team's books, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Deng played 22 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018-19 after accepting a buyout agreement from the Lakers. He then signed a one-day contract with the Chicago Bulls last year to retire with his former team.

The longtime forward agreed to give back about $7.5 million in salary to the Lakers in 2018, helping the organization clear cap space. Deng remains on L.A.'s books for $10 million over the next two seasons.

The Lakers have little room under the salary cap this offseason, with Anthony Davis expected to re-sign after opting out of his contract. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Avery Bradley also hold player options.
