John Lucas' candidacy to become the next head coach of the Houston Rockets is gaining momentum, The New York Times' Marc Stein reports.
James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and recently appointed general manager Rafael Stone are among those within the Rockets organization who admire Lucas, according to Stein. Lucas, 66, currently serves as Houston's player development coach.
Following the Los Angeles Clippers' reported hiring of Tyronn Lue, Lucas apparently remains in the running for Houston's head coaching vacancy along with fellow candidate Jeff Van Gundy. The Rockets are reportedly still in contact with Van Gundy regarding the position after interviewing him Wednesday.
Minnesota Timberwolves assistant David Vanterpool has also been linked to the job.
Lucas last manned the sidelines for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2001-03. He owns a 173-258 record over six seasons as an NBA head coach.
