Report: Trail Blazers' Ariza to sit out NBA's restart
Portland Trail Blazers forward Trevor Ariza won't play once the 2019-20 season resumes, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Ariza is involved in a custody case concerning his 12-year-old son, sources said, and he reportedly opted against competing in order to spend a one-month visitation period with his child. The court-ordered period overlaps with the NBA's Orlando restart.
Ariza stands to lose between $1 million and $1.8 million in salary by sitting out, according to Wojnarowski.
Portland currently has an empty roster spot and is eligible to sign a replacement player, ESPN's Bobby Marks notes.
After arriving in Portland via a five-player trade in February, Ariza averaged 11 points on 40% shooting from long range in 21 starts. He's the second player to reportedly opt out of the NBA's return, joining Washington Wizards swingman Davis Bertans.
The Trail Blazers are set to resume the season 3 1/2 games back of the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference. To qualify for a play-in tournament, Portland will have to finish the regular season within four games of the conference's eighth seed.
Players reportedly get until June 24 to inform their teams about whether they'll sit out the remainder of the season.
