Christian Wood could be headed to the Big Apple in free agency if the New York Knicks have it their way.
Some people in the team's front office are "enamored" with the Detroit Pistons forward, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this offseason, SNY's Ian Begley reports.
Wood became the third NBA player to test positive for the coronavirus last week. He was a dominant force for the Pistons after the club dealt Andre Drummond to the Cleveland Cavaliers at the trade deadline, averaging 21.9 points and 9.4 rebounds in 34.7 minutes per game as a starter.
Detroit would be able to go over the salary cap to re-sign Wood since the team possesses his Bird rights, but the forward should garner significant interest in what's shaping up to be a weak free-agent class.
The Knicks have somewhat of a logjam in their frontcourt with Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, and Taj Gibson all vying for minutes. Portis has a team option for next season. Gibson's contract is only partially guaranteed for the 2020-21 campaign, though, which would give New York the flexibility to create room for Wood on the roster.
At the time play was suspended, New York sat 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 21-45 record.
