The Los Angeles Lakers attempted to acquire Detroit Pistons guard Derrick Rose ahead of the February trade deadline, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Los Angeles offered a package including third-year guard Alex Caruso and draft picks for the former league MVP.

Rose, who's in the first season of a two-year, $15-million deal, has averaged 18.1 points and 5.6 assists per game - his highest output since he suffered a career-altering ACL injury during the 2012 postseason - in 50 appearances this campaign.

The Pistons took a step back this season after making the playoffs last year with a 41-41 record. Star forward Blake Griffin made just 18 appearances before undergoing surgery on his left knee, Andre Drummond was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and point guard Reggie Jackson and forward Markieff Morris were bought out.

Detroit enters Friday's slate with a 20-43 record.
