Report: Lakers waiving DeMarcus Cousins

The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving center DeMarcus Cousins, reports ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.

Los Angeles needed to clear a roster spot after agreeing to sign Markieff Morris off the buyout market earlier Friday. Cousins is likely to be waived after Morris clears waivers on Sunday, ESPN's Bobby Marks notes.

After signing with the Lakers this past offseason, Cousins didn't appear in a game with the organization after suffering a torn ACL during a workout in August.

The Lakers still have a $1.75 million disabled player exception at their disposal after waiving the big man, Marks adds. The exception was granted to the team because Cousins was likely to miss the entirety of the season.

While there was initial speculation Cousins might return in time for a playoff run, the center instead plans to continue rehabbing his ACL injury into the offseason, according to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Cousins' ACL tear is the third significant injury he's had within the past two years. The 29-year-old sustained a torn Achilles tendon in January 2018 and tore his quad last April.
