Report: Knicks president Steve Mills will 'either be reassigned' or fired
It appears David Fizdale won't be the only victim of the New York Knicks' constant dysfunction.
Following Fizdale's firing Friday after a 4-18 start to the season, the club is reportedly preparing for a future without team president Steve Mills at the helm, as he'll "either be reassigned or simply removed from the building," sources told The Athletic's Frank Isola.
Isola didn't specify when the Knicks plan to remove Mills as the team's president.
The Knicks have struggled mightily in the 13-plus seasons Mills has been associated with the team, failing to finish with a winning record in any of those campaigns, according to Forbes Sports' Adam Zagoria. New York has gone a combined 50-136 since the start of the 2017-18 campaign.
Mills was notably in charge of the Knicks' disappointing 2019 offseason that saw the organization strike out on star free agents Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The team responded by signing four power forwards and other role players like Elfrid Payton, Wayne Ellington, and Reggie Bullock for a combined $69.8 million counting toward the club's books this season. Making matters worse, Mills quickly attempted to label the team's offseason as successful despite clear positional overlap and a lack of top-tier talent on the roster.
Rumors surrounding Mills' future replacement have been circulating for some time, with Isola reporting in November that Knicks owner James Dolan plans to lure Raptors president Masai Ujiri away from Toronto with a lucrative offer.
Mills is the latest in a long line of executives hired by Dolan since he took control of the Knicks in 1997.
