The first four nations have officially qualified for next summer's inaugural Olympic men's and women's 3x3 basketball tournament, FIBA announced in Utsunomiya, Japan on Friday.
On the women's side, the first teams to qualify for Tokyo 2020 are:
- Russia
- China
- Mongolia
- Romania
And on the men's side:
- Serbia
- Russia
- China
- Japan
This initial stage of qualification is based on each country's federation ranking as of Nov. 1, 2019. The top four national federations in both the women's and men's rankings received berths with two caveats: host Japan was guaranteed at least one berth through this process - the higher-ranked team between their men's and women's - and there could be no more than two teams from each continental zone.
The next opportunity for countries to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 3x3 tournament comes at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) held in India from March 18-22 next year. Following the announcement of the teams that have qualified for Tokyo 2020 outright, FIBA unveiled the pools for the OQT:
