If Josh Jackson wants to be a part of the Memphis Grizzlies' promising young core, he's going to have to earn his place. Instead of reporting to the team's training camp, the 22-year-old has agreed to begin the season with the G League's Memphis Hustle, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

After being selected No. 4 overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2017, Jackson struggled to establish himself among the professional ranks. The athletically gifted wing has averaged 12.3 points in just over 25 minutes per game, but he's posted an abysmal 45.2 effective field-goal percentage in doing so.

Furthermore, his time in the league has been marked by various issues, both on and off the court. Jackson finished second in the NBA with 15 technical fouls last season. And in May, he was charged with felony escape and resisting arrest after an incident at Rolling Loud music festival.

This summer, the Grizzlies acquired Jackson, along with De'Anthony Melton and a pair of future second-round draft picks, in exchange for Jevon Carter and Kyle Korver in what amounted to a salary dump on the Suns' part.

After finishing as the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference last season, Memphis now boasts a number of exciting young talents. Big man Jaren Jackson Jr. was named to the All-Rookie first team last season, and the franchise added a pair of potential difference-makers in this summer's draft - No. 2 overall pick Ja Morant and No. 21 pick Brandon Clarke, who was named MVP of the summer league.
