G League to experiment with single foul shot this season

In an effort to reduce the length of games, the NBA G League will experiment with a single foul shot this season, which will make free throws worth one, two, or three points depending on the infraction that led to it, the league announced Thursday.

The new format will not apply in the last two minutes of a game or overtime. In those situations, traditional free-throw rules will apply. Additionally, shooting fouls on made baskets (and-1s) will remain unchanged.

G League head of basketball operations Brad Walker told ESPN's Zach Lowe that the new system is expected to shorten the length of each game by six-to-eight minutes.

The NBA's minor league is sometimes used as a testing ground for rule adjustments that are later adopted by the Association. For instance, the NBA has instituted a coach's challenge for the upcoming season - a rule that's been used in the G League for the past two years.
