Veteran point guard Ish Smith signed a two-year, $12-million contract with the Washington Wizards, league sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Smith spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Pistons, primarily in the sixth-man role. The soon-to-be 31-year-old averaged 9.8 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.8 rebounds in 24 minutes per contest over that span.
His relatively long stint in the Motor City was an anomaly for the well-traveled journeyman. The Wizards will soon become the 11th team Smith has suited up for since going undrafted out of Wake Forest in 2010.
Smith now has an opportunity to log meaningful minutes for a Wizards backcourt in flux. There is a John Wall-sized hole in the starting lineup beside star running mate Bradley Beal as the former faces a lengthy recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Furthermore, Washington reportedly dealt Tomas Satoransky to the Chicago Bulls in a sign-and-trade. The Czech guard started 54 games in Wall's absence last season.
