When Kevin Durant went down with an Achilles injury during Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night, some Toronto Raptors supporters were seen cheering and waving goodbye. Now, one fan is trying to make things right by encouraging others to donate to Durant's charity.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched Tuesday to raise money for the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation, which helps at-risk youth from low-income backgrounds through educational, athletics, and social programs.
"On behalf of the level-headed and true fans of Raptor Nation - from Toronto to Vancouver to Iqaluit to St. John's, and any fans living outside Canada: we wanted to say 'sorry,'" Hamzah Moin, who created the GoFundMe, wrote. "We're sorry that some fans of Raptor Nation at the Scotiabank Arena, Jurassic Park, and in some bars/restaurants showing the game, displayed an ugly side of fandom when they cheered on the injury of Kevin Durant.
"This isn't cool. This isn't right. This isn't what I expect from fellow Canadians."
As of Wednesday morning, the campaign has raised $2,287 toward its goal of $25,000.
Raptors fans have also created SorryKD.com, a website that directs visitors to donate to the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation.
