The Miami Heat waived guard Rodney McGruder on Sunday, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

If McGruder's $1.5-million salary is claimed off waivers, the Heat could avoid the luxury tax and push repeater concerns to 2022-23 at the earliest, according to HeatHoops.com's Albert Nahmad.

The decision to part with McGruder comes just hours after the 27-year-old played 23 minutes during the Heat's 117-109 loss to the Toronto Raptors. The 6-foot-4 swingman finished the contest with two points and six rebounds.

Miami fell to 38-42 with two games remaining in its season. The loss in Toronto dropped the Heat to 1.5 games behind the Detroit Pistons for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot.

McGruder started in 45 of 66 appearances for the Heat this season, averaging 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per contest.
