With his 25-game suspension for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy expiring, the Milwaukee Bucks are preparing to waive veteran shooting guard Jodie Meeks after Saturday's game against the San Antonio Spurs, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
In April, Meeks received a suspension days before the start of the Washington Wizards' postseason run. Most of his suspension carried over to the 2018-19 season after the team's first-round loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Seeking to lower their luxury tax, the Wizards dealt Meeks' $3.5-million contract to the Bucks. In exchange for facilitating the Wizards' tax dump, the Bucks also acquired $1.5 million in cash and a future second-round pick, according to Wojnarowski.
By waiting until the conclusion of the suspension to waive Meeks, Milwaukee shaves nearly $300,000 off its luxury tax bill for the season, according to HeatHoops.com's Albert Nahmad.
Meeks has averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 37.2 percent from the 3-point line over nine NBA seasons.
