Tyson Chandler is the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old veteran center was recently bought out of the remainder of his contract with the Phoenix Suns, freeing him up to join the Lakers.

"Having observed our roster for the first 10 games of this young season, one of the areas that Earvin (Johnson) and I discussed with Luke (Walton) that we desired to upgrade is interior defense and rebounding,” said general manager Rob Pelinka in an official statement.

"In Tyson Chandler we addressed that need, and so much more. We are excited that Tyson will bring championship-level experience to our Lakers team that will solidify our veteran leadership and help positively shape our young core."

Chandler was in the final season of a four-year, $52-million contract with Phoenix that was set to pay him $13.5 million. He made seven appearances in Suns colors prior to his exit, averaging 3.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in a limited role off the bench as the team prioritized playing its younger bigs like No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton.

The 18-year-pro will be slotted in as a backup behind JaVale McGee, and can make his Lakers debut Wednesday against the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Lakers currently rank 22nd in the Association in defense, allowing 111.1 points per 100 possessions. Chandler, a former Defensive Player of the Year and All-Defensive First Team member, should benefit a roster lacking in size and rim protection, although his best days are long behind him.
