Veteran Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea was announced the winner of the annual J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award on Wednesday, as selected by the Professional Basketball Writers Association.
The award honors NBA personnel that shows outstanding service and dedication to the community. Last year's winner was LeBron James.
Barea, a Puerto Rico native, has been heavily involved in relief efforts after Hurricane Maria, which devastated the territory last fall. His foundation also donated 600 bicycles to help with transportation on the island.
