Embiid didn't splurge after $148M deal: I just need video games, 'big-ass TV'

Joel Embiid enjoys the simple things in life.

The Philadelphia 76ers center signed a five-year max extension on Oct. 10, and while the typical person might use their newfound riches to indulge in something they've always wanted, Embiid did not.

Asked by ESPN's Jackie MacMullan what he bought for himself after putting pen to paper on a $148-million deal, Embiid replied, "Nothing."

"I don't drive. All I really need is my video games and a big-ass TV," the avid NBA 2K player said.

While he didn't upgrade his own digs, the 23-year-old did purchase a new home for his parents in their native Cameroon, because the old one had too many memories of his brother Arthur, who was killed in a car crash three years ago.

And though The Process didn't treat himself, he did receive congratulatory gifts, including Monopoly - and his competitive spirit apparently translates to board games.

"Monopoly, video games, basketball, it doesn't matter," Sixers teammate Justin Anderson said. "He's super competitive in all of them. It's what has made him great, and he hasn't even scratched the surface yet of what he can do. ...

"Right now, he thinks he's the best Monopoly player in the world.''

That determination to be great is one of the reasons Philly rewarded Embiid with a massive deal after he suited up in just 31 games over three seasons. Foot injuries delayed his career by two years, and a knee injury cut short his rookie campaign.

Still, Embiid impressed while on the floor and continues to do so this season, as he's averaging 20.8 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal in 27 minutes per game.
