Leonard unavailable for Spurs' season opener
The San Antonio Spurs will be opening the 2017-18 season without their All-Star forward.
Kawhi Leonard won't be available Wednesday when the Spurs host the Minnesota Timberwolves at AT&T Center, head coach Gregg Popovich said Friday, according to My San Antonio's Jeff McDonald.
The 25-year-old has been sidelined for training camp and the preseason as he recovers from right quadriceps tendinopathy.
There's no timetable for his return.
"I don't gauge it," said Popovich. "He's still rehabbing and when he's ready, he'll be ready. I try not to qualify it."
Leonard led the 61-win Spurs in scoring with 25.5 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 38 percent from 3-point range last season. He also averaged 5.8 boards, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.7 blocks in 74 appearances.
Surprisingly enough, in the eight games Leonard wasn't available for, San Antonio accumulated a strong 7-1 record.
