Lakers will retire both No. 8 and No. 24 for Kobe Bryant

Eight or 24? Why not both?

There was never any question that the Los Angeles Lakers would retire Kobe Bryant's jersey, it was only unclear which number would be emblazoned across the back.

The Lakers found an appropriate solution. Bryant's No. 8 and No. 24 will both be retired by the organization, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

It initially appeared as if the Lakers would make Bryant pick just one. Team president Magic Johnson said during an ESPN appearance on Tuesday that it was Bryant's decision as to which number he chose to represent himself with.

"Him and Jeanie Buss will sit down and make a decision on which one he wants to retire,” Magic said, according to Ryan Ward of Clutch Points.

Bryant spent his entire 20-year career with the Lakers, delivered five titles, and leads the historic franchise in scoring.

He wore No. 8 when he first entered the league two decades ago, then switched to No. 24 without providing a reason in 2006. He won three titles alongside Shaquille O'Neal while wearing No. 8, then won another two rings as the undisputed leader in his later years as No. 24.

The Lakers will raise Bryant's jersey to the rafters on Dec. 18 of the upcoming season, when the Golden State Warriors visit Staples Center.
