Jeanie Buss never understood why Lakers signed Mozgov, Deng
Jeanie Buss wishes her Los Angeles Lakers would've been a bit more prudent during last summer's free-agent spending spree.
The Lakers president and controlling owner admits she was confused by the front office's approach - specifically former general manager Mitch Kupchak and her brother, Jim Buss - to the 2016 offseason, when the purple and gold spent a combined $136 million to ink unrestricted free agents Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng to long-term deals.
"I just didn’t understand what the thought process was," Jeanie recently told Bill Oram of The Orange Country Register. "Whether our philosophies were so far apart that I couldn’t recognize what they were doing, or they couldn’t explain it well."
Los Angeles has already successfully dumped Mozgov's cumbersome contract on the Brooklyn Nets, and reportedly offered a first-round pick to any team willing to take on Deng's massive deal prior to the draft.
The Lakers have also since fired Kupchak and relieved Jim Buss of his duties as head of basketball operations (he remains a part owner), replacing the pair with Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka.
With Magic and Pelinka now in charge of the team's front office, the Lakers have been careful not to dole out huge contracts to free agents this summer, signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Tyler Ennis to one-year deals.
