LaVar Ball explains why Lonzo fits better with Lakers than Celtics
LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of projected top-five draft pick Lonzo Ball, made his son's decision to turn down a workout with the Boston Celtics seem like a compliment for the team holding the top pick.
The young point guard worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers, who have the second selection in the June 22 draft. The Celtics, who pick first, are expected by many to take Markelle Fultz.
“Team-wise, the Lakers are a better fit,” LaVar Ball said on the "CSN CelticsTalk" Podcast with Kyle Draper and A. Sherrod Blakely. “They (Lakers) really don’t have a leader. Boston already went to the playoffs. They have a leader.”
The senior Ball recognized Boston's Isaiah Thomas for his exceptional strength as a playmaker – something his son wouldn't necessarily be able to showcase playing in Thomas' shadow.
“Now going straight to the Lakers, they’re super-young,” LaVar said. “It’s Lonzo’s team; that’s my opinion of it. Everybody else might think about it differently or something. But I’m just being realistic and thinking about it. He would be a better fit with the Lakers instead of Boston because (the Celtics are) already established and on their way up.”
