Report: Medical review says Bosh suffered 'career-ending illness'
A medical review conducted by the NBA and the National Basketball Players' Association agreed with the Miami Heat's viewpoint that Chris Bosh has suffered a "career-ending illness," sources told the South Florida Sun Sentinel's Ira Winderman.
The ruling is expected to allow the Heat to waive Bosh and clear his contract from their salary cap, although that likely won't come until July 1.
Bosh would be guaranteed his remaining $25.3-million salary for next season and $26.8 million for 2018-19, mostly covered by insurance. The release would give the Heat approximately $37 million in cap space, instantly making them a player in this summer's free-agent sweepstakes.
For Bosh, a team wishing to claim him would not be eligible for similar cap relief should his medical issues persist. The 11-time All-Star has missed the better part of the last three seasons due to a serious blood-clot condition that has been described in some quarters as life-threatening.
The 33-year-old has maintained his intent to play again in the NBA, although many believe he would be taking a tremendous medical risk in doing so. A recent survey of 20 league executives indicated that there may be little interest in signing the power forward.
