Warriors' Kerr will not coach in Game 4, out until back improves
The Golden State Warriors will be without their head coach for a second straight game, and possibly longer.
Steve Kerr told reporters Sunday he won't be manning the sidelines in Monday's Game 4 against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The bench boss, who missed 43 games last year due to chronic pain stemming from two back surgeries, has been able to coach through the symptoms ... until Game 3 on Saturday.
"This past week for whatever reason, things got worse," the 51-year-old said. "My symptoms got worse, and I was not able to coach."
He's consulting with doctors in hopes of finding a long-term solution, noting he doesn't plan to be in and out of the lineup.
"If I can get some improvement, I'll get back on the sidelines. But I'm not gonna do that unless I know I can help the team," he said.
The reigning Coach of the Year admitted he's suffering from pain and discomfort, but wouldn't elaborate beyond that. He's dealt with nausea, headaches, and neck soreness in the past.
While on the shelf, he's still watching tape and talking to his staff and players. Assistant coach Mike Brown took over in Kerr's absence Saturday, helping the No. 1 Dubs overcome a 17-point deficit in the first half to sink the Blazers 119-113. They're one win away from advancing to the second round.
