Sixers select Furkan Korkmaz with No. 26 pick
The Philadelphia 76ers have selected Furkan Korkmaz out of Turkey with the 26th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
The 18-year-old has shown his elite scoring ability at all levels of play, and has held his own competing against grown men in the top levels of the Euroleague. Korkmaz is a very sound technical shooter, and has shown there is no limit to his range beyond the arc. While his long-range shooting is the first thing that jumps out, he's an above average athlete who doesn't shy away from penetrating deep in the paint. The talented Turkish teen is mostly a scorer, but he has shown himself to be a willing passer and doesn't hesitate to get his teammates involved.
In drafting Korkmaz, the 76ers show they are comfortable waiting for his development while in Europe. He certainly needs to add a great deal of bulk to his 175-pound frame, but that should come easily with his 6-foot-7 height. While Korkmaz is polished on the offensive end, he has yet to develop fully at the defensive end of the ball, and has a long way to go in that area to be a regular NBA player.
With Korkmaz not turning 20 until June 2017, Philadelphia has cleary decided his future potential was worth the gamble with the 26th pick. Continued development in Europe will make him stronger and more NBA ready for the leap to the rigors of the North American game.
