Bratislava, June 7, 2022 (AFP) - Slovakia coach Stefan Tarkovic was sacked on Tuesday after a series of poor results, the Slovak Football Association (SFZ) said.

The 49-year-old lost his job after "repeated insufficient results and unsatisfactory performance", the SFZ said in a statement on its website.

Slovakia, ranked 45th in the world, have won just three of their eight past games.

"The last game for Tarkovic was Monday's 1-0 defeat to Kazakhstan in a Nations League game," it added.

Tarkovic took over the side in October 2020 and led them to the European Championship, which was postponed until 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

They failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, finishing third in qualifying Group H behind Croatia and Russia.

The SFZ said Tarkovic's assistants Samuel Slovak and Marek Mintal -- both former Slovakia players -- would lead the team in the upcoming Nations League games in Azerbaijan on June 10 and in Kazakhstan three days later.
