Henderson on UFC's new drug policy: 'I am happy that they're cracking down now'

MMA legend Dan Henderson sees the UFC's stringent new drug testing policy as a positive for the industry as a whole, but he's still disappointed with the way the promotion suddenly banned the usage of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) last year.

"I've been asking for that for a few years," Henderson told MMAjunkie.com's Ben Fowlkes. "They just up and got rid of TRT instead, but some people actually need it. It's unfortunate that that's the way it went, but I am happy that they're cracking down now. It’s definitely taken them long enough, but I'm happy with where they're at."

At the ripe old age of 44 (which is at least old in MMA years), Henderson likely would have needed TRT to compete with his generally much younger foes, though he doesn't think it had a massive effect on his performance.

"I wasn't really taking that much to begin with," Henderson said. "I just kind of quit cold turkey."

According to "Hendo," the UFC could have eventually solved their PED issue by just randomly unleashing their new policy with no advanced notice.

"It's unfortunate that it came down to this," Henderson said. "They should have just started doing the no-advance-notice drug testing randomly, and that would have cured all the problems.

"TRT being legal or not, the no-advance-notice testing would make sure no one's abusing anything."
