Ray Longo doesn't want to see Silva vs. Weidman III
A victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 183 would immediately vault Anderson Silva back into title contention in the middleweight division.
In fact, UFC president Dana White has assured Silva a third shot at champion Chris Weidman (or a second bout with Vitor Belfort should he miraculously win the title in February), though the promotion has been known to make promises that suddenly evaporate once a more intriguing or interesting matchup arises.
"The Spider" has already tasted defeat twice against Weidman and the champion's trainer, Ray Longo, doesn't want to see Silva get another kick at the can.
"I don't want to see the fight," Longo told MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi. "Me, personally, as a trainer, I don't want to see the fight. And the guy is getting older. At this point, you have nothing to prove. I don't get it. I don't want to see the guy get hurt. You're putting a talented, one of the greatest of all time, up against a strong, huge, fierce fighter. It's not like Weidman is deficient in any area. He's proven it."
Longo joins a growing legion of fighters, fans and media who are openly questioning the UFC's method of awarding title shots.
"I don't get it," Longo said. "And it should be vice versa. If Nick Diaz wins, then he should do it. I don't like when they say one guy is gonna get it and one guy's not."
