Usman passes Jones to become UFC's pound-for-pound king

There's once again a new UFC leader in the men's pound-for-pound rankings.

Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman moved into the No. 1 spot Tuesday, topping former light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones.

Usman has defended the 170-pound title four times since winning it against Tyron Woodley in March 2019, most recently knocking out Jorge Masvidal in April.

"The Nigerian Nightmare" is scheduled to meet Colby Covington in a rematch at UFC 268 on Nov. 6.

Jones, widely considered one of the greatest fighters ever, hasn't stepped into the Octagon since a narrow 205-pound title defense against Dominick Reyes in February 2020.

The veteran vacated the belt later that year to compete in the heavyweight division, and he was expected to challenge the winner of the March title fight between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou. However, Jones failed to come to terms with the UFC, and his return bout still hasn't been set.

The 34-year-old was arrested Friday morning in Las Vegas on charges of misdemeanor battery domestic violence and injuring or tampering with a vehicle.

On Thursday night, Jones' 2013 bout against Alexander Gustafsson was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
