Cormier to star in 'Warrior' TV spin-off
Daniel Cormier continues to thrive outside the Octagon.
The former UFC two-division champion has been cast in a planned television spin-off of the 2011 mixed martial arts film "Warrior," director Gavin O'Connor told DiscussingFilm earlier this week.
Cormier will play an MMA fighter named Bobby Watkins, who "lives in Houston and is fighting his way out of poverty for his family," O'Connor said.
The series, titled "Warriors," will follow four fighters who compete in a tournament called Sparta. It will primarily focus on life outside of the cage, according to O'Connor.
The show will only be a thematic follow-up to the movie and isn't expected to star Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as the Conlon brothers or Nick Nolte as their estranged father.
Cormier held the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles during his lengthy UFC stint. He retired from the sport in August 2020 following an unsuccessful attempt to reclaim heavyweight gold in a trilogy bout against Stipe Miocic.
The 42-year-old currently serves as a color commentator for the UFC.
