Blaydes embraces heel role after dominant win over Volkov
It appears Curtis Blaydes found his identity after his win over Alexander Volkov in the UFC Fight Night main event.
Blaydes faced criticism from UFC president Dana White after dominating Volkov with takedowns Saturday in Las Vegas. It also didn't seem like a performance that appealed to fans, but the 29-year-old is satisfied with his victory, and he doesn't care what others think.
"I know who I am now: I'm a heel," Blaydes said at the postfight press conference, according to MMA Junkie. "You don't like what I do. I like to make you mad. ... That's probably the best part about this win: I predicted this, and I did it (over) 25 minutes. Didn't look the best, but I'm OK with having a gritty win like that. I know a lot of fans didn't like it. I'm OK with that. It makes me happy."
In a tweet Thursday, Blaydes told people not to watch the Volkov fight if they were expecting to see a stand-up war.
Blaydes is riding a four-fight winning streak and is ranked No. 3 in the heavyweight division. He's known for his ground game and has become one of the best wrestlers in his class.
