UFC interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje doesn't think much of Conor McGregor's sudden retirement announcement after UFC 250 early Sunday morning.
"Thankfully all of the elderly are still hiding in their homes," Gaethje tweeted. "This guy is on another bender. #propershit #ByeFelicia."
McGregor took to Twitter to reveal he's "decided to retire from fighting," later explaining that he doesn't currently find the sport exciting.
Gaethje and McGregor were reportedly in talks to fight this summer, but the coronavirus pandemic halted that plan. Instead, Gaethje stepped up to face Tony Ferguson for the interim belt and finished him at UFC 249 in May.
Now, the 31-year-old is expected to meet Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout later this year.
However, even after Gaethje beat Ferguson to set up a title fight, McGregor called out the interim titleholder and vowed to "butcher" him. Gaethje later said McGregor is "losing his clout" among fighters and assured that he's focused on fighting Nurmagomedov.
Gaethje recently revealed he wants to fight three more times before retiring and hopes McGregor will be one of his last opponents.
