Report: UFC targeting Poirier-Hooker for end of June

Peter Casey / USA TODAY Sports

The UFC is working on a June 27 main event featuring lightweights Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker, MMAJunkie's Mike Bohn reports.

The promotion hopes to stage the contest at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, but Hooker would need to be granted entry into the United States from New Zealand amid the coronavirus pandemic. The bout could move to "Fight Island" in July if Hooker is unable to enter the country.

Before COVID-19 spread across the globe, a Poirier-Hooker meeting was in the works for a San Diego card in May.

Poirier hasn't fought since September 2019, when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in a fight for the unified lightweight championship. Hooker is coming off a split-decision victory over Paul Felder in February.

Poirier and Hooker rank third and fifth, respectively, among contenders in the lightweight division.
