Edgar expecting drop to bantamweight after fight vs. 'Korean Zombie'

Frankie Edgar doesn't expect to continue as a featherweight once his upcoming short-notice bout against Chan Sung Jung is in the past.

"The Answer" had been scheduled to make his long-awaited bantamweight debut against Cory Sandhagen at UFC Raleigh on Jan. 25, but he accepted a fight with "The Korean Zombie" for Dec. 21 when Jung's original opponent, Brian Ortega, fell off the UFC Busan card due to an injury.

If Edgar upsets Jung later this month, that would inevitably move him closer to another title shot at 145 pounds. Whatever happens, the 38-year-old isn't counting on challenging for the belt in that division again after losing to Max Holloway in July.

"I mean, who knows?" Edgar told "The Luke Thomas Show" on Tuesday. "I didn’t know I was going to be fighting in two weeks. I'm pretty much game for anything, but I do think 135 (pounds) will be my future."

Edgar added: "I'm gonna get there eventually. Just a little hiccup along the way."

The 38-year-old is still technically scheduled to face Sandhagen a little over a month after his fight with Jung, but there's no guarantee that bout will take place.

"Right now, I really don't want to think about Cory," Edgar told MMA Fighting's Damon Martin. "I think I've got to worry about the Zombie, first and foremost. ... If it works out, we'll see what happens, but the test in front of me is no joke.

"I'm expecting a war. I’m preparing for a war," he continued. "That’s the kind of fighter I am. I can't think about January right now. I’ve got to worry about Dec. 21. That's what's on my mind."

The former UFC lightweight champion said he's confident he'll still fight Sandhagen "down the road" even if it doesn't happen next month.
