Report: Romero-Gustafsson light heavyweight title bout in works for UFC 230

The UFC is working on booking Yoel Romero versus Alexander Gustafsson for either the interim or the official light heavyweight title at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 3, ESPN's Ariel Helwani reports, citing multiple sources.

The UFC has reportedly been seeking a title bout to put atop its MSG card - one that currently features Nate Diaz's return to the Octagon against Dustin Poirier and a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman.

Daniel Cormier currently wears the belt in the light heavyweight division, but he's yet to defend it since January. He instead won the heavyweight title from Stipe Miocic in July.

The potential Romero-Gustafsson bout, which has yet to be finalized, would serve as the interim title fight or determine the new king of the division.

Gustafsson, 18-4, has won his last two fights, the most recent being a TKO of Glover Teixeira last May. Yet, despite his absence, he's still listed as the UFC's No. 1 contender at light heavyweight.

Romero, 13-3, makes his bidding at middleweight but has struggled to make weight in that division. He lost his first title bout against Robert Whittaker last July, won what would have been an interim title bout against Rockhold had he made weight in February, and lost a rematch with Whittaker in June by split decision.
