Gunnar Nelson is steadily climbing the welterweight charts and his coach John Kavanagh has an idea of who should be next for him:
No. 1 contender Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.
Following Nelson's second-round submission win over Alan Jouban on Saturday, Kavanagh took to Twitter to propose a matchup between Nelson and Thompson using a screenshot from "The Karate Kid" as a reference to their shared martial arts pedigrees.
Whats next for gunni? How about this summer we find out who the real karate kid is in the @ufc ? #GunnivWonderboy pic.twitter.com/mvffhFSKWi

Thompson is coming off back-to-back world title opportunities in which he failed to wrest the welterweight championship from Tyron Woodley. The two fought to a draw last November and Woodley took a majority decision in the rematch.
Nelson currently sits in the top-10 of the UFC's rankings with three wins in his past four bouts. He owns a 7-2 record inside the Octagon.
