Rashad Evans: Jon Jones' failed drug test could bring legacy into question

Paul Abell / US PRESSWIRE

Jon Jones' standing as arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history could have been cemented with a dominant victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.

Instead, Jones was pulled from the card due to a failed drug test and now faces questions about the legitimacy of his past accomplishments.

Jones had never tested positive before this incident, but his former teammate and friend Rashad Evans believes that the doubt created could impact the former light heavyweight champion's legacy.

"I hate to see someone who I consider probably one of the greatest fighters of all time make these mistakes," Evans told Damon Martin of FOX Sports. "Because now you're always going to have these thoughts in your mind like, 'Jon was good, but was he always cheating? Was he cheating then? Would he cheat now?' All these questions and it's like how great really was he? It's something that can make you think. He didn't look great against OSP (Ovince Saint-Preux), was he not on something? These are all questions you have to ask."

The substance that Jones was flagged for has yet to be revealed, and the ongoing saga will likely not be put to rest until his case is settled by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

If Jones has to serve the potential two-year suspension that comes with a violation of this nature, a rematch with the 37-year-old Cormier will likely be off the table.

"Disappointed. Disappointed for him, Disappointed for DC, but just disappointed for the fans as well," Evans said. "It's a different day and age in the UFC and you've got to be more careful about the things you put inside your body and be accountable for it.

"When you don't, it affects everyone. It's just unfortunate because I love what he does inside the cage."
