Retired U.S. soccer icon Abby Wambach was arrested early Sunday morning in Portland, Ore. for driving under the influence.
Portland police said Wambach, 35, was pulled over at 11:05 p.m. local time after running a red light, and was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. Upon being taken to Portland's Central Precinct, she also failed a breath test.
Wambach was booked at 2:02 a.m. local time, according to the Multnomah County Jail, and charged with misdemeanor DUII (driving under the influence of intoxicants). She was released on her own recognizance, with espnW reporting that Wambach was "polite and cooperative" with police.

The decorated American took to Facebook on Sunday afternoon to apologize for the incident:
"Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down," she wrote.
"I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated. I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example."
Wambach, whose 184 international goals are the most any player - male or female - has ever scored while representing their country, announced her retirement in October, closing the book on the most prolific career that women's soccer has ever seen.

Sunday morning's incident comes days after Wambach won the ANA Inspiration Pro-Am golf tournament in California.
