Toronto FC will be without captain Michael Bradley for three-to-four months after general manager Ali Curtis revealed Monday that the midfielder will undergo surgery on a "severe" ankle injury, according to The Athletic's Joshua Kloke.

The 32-year-old, who initially suffered the injury during the MLS Cup final in November, will go under the knife Tuesday in New York.

Curtis said the delay in scheduling the surgery stemmed from the club's hope that rehab would be enough to help the American overcome the ailment picked up in the 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders.

The 2020 MLS season begins Feb. 29, meaning Bradley could miss the opening three months of the campaign should he require the full recovery period.

Signed from Italian club Roma in 2014 as a Designated Player, Bradley agreed to a three-year contract extension last month using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), freeing up a Designated Player slot on the roster.

In six seasons in Toronto, Bradley's made 200 appearances in all competitions. He's captained the team to three MLS Cup finals, including the club's first title in 2017, the same year in which TFC won an unprecedented treble by also capturing the Supporters' Shield and Canadian Championship.
