Report: Toronto FC's Vazquez making Qatar move

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

A crucial member of Toronto FC's 2017 MLS Cup-winning side is heading for the exit.

The Reds reportedly agreed to a deal to sell Spanish playmaker Victor Vazquez to an as-yet-unnamed club in Qatar pending a physical, according to TSN's Kristian Jack. Toronto will apparently receive a transfer fee, Jack adds.

"(We're) gonna miss him," Reds head coach Greg Vanney told Sportsnet's John Molinaro. "Victor has been a loyal servant to the club, and a fantastic player, and an even better person. This opportunity came up for him and his family, and it's important for him."

Vanney added: "I don't think we'll find a way to replace Victor exactly, but we'll find a player or players that will also add to our team in this transition."

Vazquez joined TFC in 2017 and registered 10 goals and 13 assists in all competitions in his debut campaign. He scored the clinching second goal in the closing stages of the MLS Cup win over the Seattle Sounders.

In 2018, injuries prevented him from reaching those same heights, though he still contributed eight goals and four assists in 26 games in all competitions. He turns 32 next week.

His transfer would be the first such move by Toronto's new general manager, Ali Curtis, who was hired earlier in January.

Named in the MLS Best XI for 2017, Vazquez also won two Canadian Championships and reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League during his time in Toronto.
