Atlanta United is reportedly ready to build on the success of its inaugural season.
The recent expansion side is "in the final stages" of completing a deal worth as much as $1.65 million for Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe, sources told ESPN's Taylor Twellman and Jeff Carlisle.
Atlanta's offer includes $750,000 in general allocation money, $300,000 in targeted allocation money, and between $500,000 and $600,000 in incentive-based compensation, according to Carlisle.
The base fee would amount to an MLS-record $1.05 million, surpassing the initial $900,000 that Orlando City gave up to sign Dom Dwyer from Sporting KC last summer.
Portland would also pocket a chunk of any future sale involving Nagbe.
The Timbers began the process of exploring a trade when Nagbe requested a pay raise, sources told ESPN FC. Nagbe made $565,000 in guaranteed compensation this year, data from the MLS Players' Union shows.
Nagbe would augment a thrilling Atlanta attack led by Designated Players Miguel Almiron and Josef Martinez. Only Toronto FC scored more than Atlanta's 70 goals in MLS last season.
