New York - A brutal cold snap expected to hit the northeastern U.S. has forced the postponement of this weekend's Major League Soccer clash between the New England Revolution and Orlando City, officials said Friday.
Temperatures at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., where Saturday's game was to be played, are expected to sink to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 6 degrees Celsius), with winds exacerbating the chill factor.
That raised the prospect of Saturday night's game being the coldest in MLS history.
The game has been rescheduled for Sept. 2.
"All of us involved in this decision believe this is in the best interest of the fans, the players, and the game," Revolution president Brian Bilello said in a statement. "We at the Revolution look forward to seeing all our fans at the Orlando game on September 2."
New England will now play its first home game of the new season on March 25 against Minnesota United.
