MLS made mathematical error, says TFC yet to clinch playoff spot
Don't start celebrating just yet, Toronto.
After Major League Soccer announced Toronto FC clinched the second playoff berth in club history by virtue of Sunday's thrilling 3-3 draw with the New York Red Bulls, the league reneged, conceding a mathematical error was made.
The Reds have not, in fact, booked a spot in the postseason.
Jozy Altidore scored twice to earn the Canadian side a point at BMO Field, and the final whistle was met with celebration from the club and congratulations from the league, both of whom announced that TFC was bound for the playoffs; the league's standings page denoted that Greg Vanney's side was the first to clinch.
Not so fast, it turns out.
Upon further analysis, @FCDallas are the first team to secure a playoff spot. @torontofc has not clinched yet. https://t.co/0mVxnUpHre

MLS didn't specify exactly how the miscalculation was made.
Toronto FC, sitting atop the Eastern Conference on 47 points with five regular-season matches remaining, will book its place in the postseason with a victory over Philadelphia this weekend. For real, this time.
