Toronto Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis is calling it a career after 11 seasons in the majors.

The 35-year-old formally announced his retirement from baseball Friday morning, citing physical issues as the reason for hanging up his cleats.

"I put my heart and soul and my body into this year to see how I was going to feel, but my body can't handle it anymore," Izturis told Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.

Izturis, who signed a minor-league deal with Toronto in January, hasn't appeared in a big-league game since 2014 due to knee and shoulder surgeries.

He played eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, and got his first taste of the bigs with the Montreal Expos in 2004.

Izturis finishes with a respectable .269/.331/.372 career batting line.
