The Philadelphia Phillies' rebuild has reached the front office.
On Thursday, the club announced it had elected not to extend the contract of general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Assistant GM Scott Proefrock was named interim GM effective immediately.
"It's never an easy decision to make a change," Phillies incoming president Andy MacPhail said. "Ruben has had a direct impact on some of the best years in the team's history. He helped to create some great memories for Phillies fans with his accomplishments, but in order to return to a top-contending club, we believe this is the right thing to do as we continue the rebuilding process."
The 50-year-old Amaro took over as GM in November of 2008 after serving as assistant GM for 10 seasons. He joined the Phillies as a bat boy in 1980 and spent five seasons as an outfielder for the team.

Amaro inherited a roster that won the World Series in 2008 after Pat Gillick retired. The Phillies reached the postseason in Amaro's first three years at the helm, including a second National League pennant in 2009, but have failed to qualify since 2011. Philadelphia currently holds baseball's worst record, at 54-86, entering Thursday's play.
