The San Francisco Giants have made a trade offer to the Philadelphia Phillies for second baseman Chase Utley.
Giants general manager Bobby Evans confirmed the report his team was looking to acquire the six-time All-Star to fill in as All-Star Joe Panik recovers from a back injury.
Utley is in the midst of his worst season, hitting just .179 in 65 games before going on the disabled list. But since his return, he's gone 7-for-17 with three doubles in five games, to up his average to .196.
The veteran is owed approximately $4 million for the remainder of this season with a $15-million option for 2016 that won't vest if he doesn't eclipse 500 plate appearances.
