Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has already had it with major league umpiring this season and now he's taken exception with the replay system.
The skipper was tossed in the third inning on Tuesday for arguing a balk call on left-hander Clayton Kershaw.
While Mattingly sat stewing in the clubhouse, an eighth inning call is what made the manager even more upset. With two outs and tied at 3-3, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun singled to drive in the eventual winning run. The Dodgers challenged the play where Braun was ruled safe, though the call stood following review as there was not definitive evidence to overrule.
"I don’t like 'close enough,'" Mattingly told JP Hooenstra of the Los Angeles Daily News. "You've got 14 angles, you should make the call, safe or out, then it stands or is overturned."
Mattingly's problem didn't appear limited to how Tuesday's call went, but rather a critique of the entire system in place.
"(Those reviewing) should not know who's umpiring. They should not know who's playing the game. Just look at the call, and call out or safe," Mattingly said. "They shouldn't know what the (original) call was.
"I think we should take the human element out of it."
